Xu, one of the leaders the Red Turbans, rebelled against the Yuan Dynasty in 1351 and declared himself emperor with the state name of Song. The Tian Ding era (1359-60) was the last of his four era names. Xu at one time commanded an army exceeding one million and his legacy was instrumental to Zhu Yuanzhangs success in establishing the Ming Dynasty in 1368. Xu was ambushed and killed by Chen Youlang at Caishi in 1360. . [165]
